Elegy (Epilogue)

When all was done the pianist stayed on stage,
intently hearing silence. Just a while,
said he, alone, into the spaces where
another had once stood, who took his joys

and turned them into cruel tensions. Thus
he heard the cold replies within the air,
as blank as olden verse, as he had heard
applause filling the ears of all around;

empty, the hall stared through him, as if he
were never there, not even when he took
the roaring flood of song inside him by

its source and handed it to one he thought
a friend. After, he stood. Then looking up,
he closed his heavy heart, and heard beauty.
