their fingers touch

for S.

their fingers touch but not each other’s; sounds
stream out from different instruments, and so
there is a mingling, touchless more than cold;
her part soars high above his but their rounds
do place them firmly where one sits, one stands;
and even if for them that music speaks
no words have passed to break silences meek –

for them no warmth can pass between their hands,
and so he watches her embrace a thing
which he would rather have himself replace;
and if she knows one bit of him her pace
slows not – he follows, melodies to sing
with her float in his harmonies; look how
the distance in their movement holds them now
