under the if and why of this delight
is how and where; and if the shuddering who
may what this time to interject its too
then give and sigh and say this is quite right;
the softly sliding lip on lip to fight
each cough exploding from the tongue; and do
or may the asking in the moaning coo
of you and i and we in rhyming tight
(and should this could but kiss and would but breathe
my verbs upon your noun: then let us live
to stoke and poke these fires of smaller death
this why and if which whispers underneath
the sheets from darker nights can barely thieve
and feed the desperation of this one shared breath)
