I wish to laugh, then laugh I like a fool,
When laughter lights my face like forest fire,
And if my laughter should in faith inspire,
Perchance can freedom happily fill me full!
That such a feisty laugh infect and pull
The conscience of an icy-hearted liar,
A tiny hope exists: a glad empire
Is spread by laughter, a never-resting tool:
So laugh! And thus fight sorrow; feel the cheers
Warm to the fallows of a heart
Abandoned to foul thoughts. Let no more tears
Strike any face, let laughter tear apart
Each gloomy time; so laugh, and feel this joy,
That all may be in ecstasy’s employ!
