If touch is language

If touch is language, then let me be blind,
That I may still this tongue of mine, and lead
My hands instead to speak of such a need—
Must there be speech? My fingers do not mind
The silence. They can speak enough; resigned
In quietude, I can know your body’s deed:
Your hands, your hair, or where you sing and feed.
If touch is language, oh! let me be blind,
That I may learn to feel a heartbeat’s strength
And learn from fevers secrets of your thought.
My fingertips shake slightly. In the length
Of breathing, let touch speak: lest is forgot
The nature of our other tongues, let these
Stray twenty fingers embrace in their kiss.
