Shadows’ Hymn

I will resist with all my human might

The coming of the dawn’s bright open skies,

For music stems from darkness’ purple night.

Hear ye!—hear, those who worship hours bright!—

You live a day that fades like children’s lies!

I will resist with all my human might

That call of day which brings with it new light

(When silky skies submit to Time’s white dyes),

For music stems from darkness’ purple night.

In honesty, I say the day’s a blight;

Detest that time when slumber cruelly dies—

I will resist with all my human might

The light; night-dwellers’ never-ending plight

Of which the peaceful Night wants to destroy,

For music stems from darkness’ purple night.

The minutes pass in Time’s unstopping flight

And darkness’ dream, with utmost plangence, cries:

I will resist with all my human might

This death of Colour! I perceive a wight

Which snatches Sleep, and jewels from mine eyes,

For music stems from darkness’ purple night.

The Night’s swift ending: that’s a poignant sight,

When Time creeps past like alleys’ passers-by…

I will resist with all my human might,

For music stems from darkness’ purple night.
